M38 Model German Paratrooper Helmet Normandy Battle Damaged: Is based on a standard M38 model shell and has the early pattern spanner bolts. It has the second pattern subdued eagle decal. It represents one left on the battlefield for several years before being recovered. The helmet has its original Luftwaffe blue/grey colour and has been covered with chicken wire for camoflauge. Notice how the colour's are very subtle, this reflects a true aged helmet, many modern reproductions have very garish and new looking schemes! The helmet has taken a bullet to the top side of the shell and shrapnel damaged further along. There is one exit hole from where the bullet exited. It is likely this paratrooper was shot and then sustained further expolosive injuries. The shell has several rust spots in places mainly around the rim and battle damged areas giving a true authentic feel. The eagle is the late war subdued pattern, extremely rare on any German helmet and is about 95% intact. The inner lining has been ripped apart from the the force of the expolosion/bullet. The rubber is now very hard and there is approximately half of the leather liner remaining held together with some thread. The aluminium is pitted and marked in several areas. The aluminium is marked '71' which is the shell size and the rim is marked 'ET71' and '657' which are the manufacturer, size and batch numbers. Finally the owners name has been hand painted inside the helmet: 'H. Schmelzer III/F.J.D.'. There is also a faint acceptance stamp underneath the hardened rubber! The rusting and ageing on this helmet is really breathtaking! It would make a superb item in your Luftwaffe relic Paratrooper helmet collection. This item also comes with an address label stamped '21 DEC 1944' and addressed from an 82'd US Airborne Sergeant to a lady in Washington DC and a suitable aged box!
