M38 Model German Paratrooper Helmet Crete: Is based on a standard M38 model shell, but has the early pattern spanner bolts. It has the second pattern eagle decal. This is one of the best German Paratrooper Crete helmets out there! The helmet has its original Luftwaffe apple green colour and has been repainted in sand colour with the decal being masked off. Most Crete (Kreta), helmets were standard European colour's although some rare ones were painted sand colour as this one has been. Notice how the colour's are very subtle, this reflects a true aged helmet, many modern reproductions have very garish and new looking schemes! There is light rusting to the top of the helmet and this can be increased by leaving the helmet outside, as I shall do till sold! The shell has several rust spots in places mainly around the rims edge and top of the helmet giving a true authentic feel. The eagle has been painted round but is very dark in places. Notice how the helmet bolts have a slightly lighter colour, this is due to field wear. There is a makers stamp and shell size marking on the left hand rim ('ET71') and a batch number on the rear rim ('67711'). These two markings are also slightly rusted. The inner lining is very well maintained yet aged, again to reflect the period of use and 60+ years of ageing. The lining rubber is black/grey to reflect a typical M38 lining. There are two faded stamps in the liner leather. There is also a helmet acceptance stamp inside the dome of the shell. Notice the rusting and ageing to the helmet rim, straps and buckles. The straps are superbly aged yet still very pliable and useable and notice the wear to the leather lining rim! This helmet would make a superb item in your Luftwaffe Medic Paratrooper collection. This item also comes with an address label stamped '21 DEC 1944' and addressed from an 82'd US Airborne Sergeant to a lady in Washington DC and a suitable aged box! A great item for the German Crete Paratrooper collector.
